In 2015, the demand for ornamental fish has gone up in China. It's almost 10% higher than last year's. According to the statistics, the number of Chinese new ornamental fish dealers has increased about 400. Companies and hotels are becoming the dominant buyers, because they think ornamental fish not only symbolizes good fortune, but also beautifies the environment. Ordinary people also like to breed some kind of fish to increase their life interest. The major ornamental fish exporting countries like Indonesia, Sri lanka, Malaysia, Singapore, Vietnam, Thailand, etc, regard China as a huge promising market, starting to seek Chinese cooperative partners.

Ornamental fishes are nowadays rapidly gaining importance because of their aesthetic value and also due to their immense commercial value in the export trade world over. The art of keeping aquarium is ancient and it started around 800 B.C. in China with gold fish Carassius auratus, which is in demand and a popular ornamental fish throughout the world even today. These fishes are often called as “living jewels” due to their varied colour, shape and behavior. In the ornamental aquaculture sector, ornamental fish breeding, culture and trade provide excellent opportunities as a non-food fishery activity for employment and income generation. It is environment friendly, socially acceptable and involves low investment for adopting as a small scale enterprise with high return. The attarctive coloration and quiet disposition of ornamental fish provide a source of joy and peace for people irrespective of age group.
