Description

Seachem Reef Buffer – Professional pH & Alkalinity Stabilizer

Maintain a Perfect 8.3 pH in Demanding Reef Environments

In a thriving reef aquarium, organic acids produced by corals and biological waste constantly pull your pH downward. While standard marine buffers are designed for fish-only systems, Seachem Reef Buffer is specifically engineered to combat the unique acidic pressures of a reef environment. With a specialized pK of 8.6, it provides the extra "push" needed to lock your aquarium at the ideal pH of 8.3, ensuring your corals and invertebrates have the stable environment they need to flourish.

Key Features & Benefits:

  • Dual-Action Formula: Simultaneously raises pH and carbonate alkalinity (KH), simplifying your dosing routine.

  • Optimized for Reefs: Features a higher pK (8.6) than competing products. This ensures greater stability in systems with high bioloads where maintaining a pH of 8.3 is traditionally difficult.

  • Safety-First Design: Formulated with a precise blend of carbonate and bicarbonate salts to prevent "overshooting" your pH to dangerous levels when used as directed.

  • Pure Ingredients: Unlike many "off-the-shelf" baking soda-based buffers, Seachem uses a professional-grade blend that won't disrupt your ionic balance.

  • Versatile Sizing: Available in 50g, 250g, 500g, 1kg, and 4kg sizes to suit everything from nano-reefs to commercial displays.

Why pK Matters:

The pK of a buffer is the pH level at which it is strongest. Most competing products have a pK of 8.3, which often results in an actual tank pH of only 8.0–8.2 due to organic acid interference. Reef Buffer’s pK of 8.6 provides the "overhead" necessary to reliably reach and maintain the gold standard of 8.3.

Directions for Use:

Important: Always check pH and alkalinity before use. Use Seachem MultiTest™ Marine pH & Alkalinity for the most accurate results.

  1. Dosing: Use 5 g (approx. 1 level teaspoon) for every 150 L (40 US gallons) of tank water.

  2. Preparation: Dissolve the powder in at least 250 mL (1 cup) of freshwater.

  3. Application: Add the solution directly to the aquarium. This dose will raise pH by approximately 0.1 units and alkalinity by about 0.5 meq/L.

  4. Maintenance: In established reef systems, adjustment may be necessary bi-weekly to semi-weekly depending on coral growth and bioload.

Pro-Tips for Reef Success:

  • Don't Overdose: Excess alkalinity can cause the precipitation (loss) of calcium, magnesium, and strontium.

  • Sequence Your Dosing: Never mix Reef Buffer™ directly with calcium, magnesium, or strontium supplements. Wait at least 30 minutes between additives, or dose on alternating days.

  • When to Switch: If your pH is already stable at 8.3 but you need to raise alkalinity, use Seachem Reef Builder or Reef Carbonate instead.
