Description
Red Sea REEF-SPEC™ Carbon is a premium, highly activated carbon specifically engineered for marine and reef aquariums to ensure the highest standard of water clarity and purity. It is the ultimate choice for hobbyists seeking to rapidly and effectively remove organic pollutants that negatively impact water quality, light penetration, and coral health.
Key Features and Benefits
The Role of Carbon in a Reef Aquarium
Activated carbon performs a vital role by using a physical process called adsorption to remove organic molecules too small for protein skimmers or fine mechanical filters.
By stripping out these small organic pollutants (proteins, fats, carbohydrates, etc.), REEF-SPEC Carbon helps to:
- Improve Water Clarity: Eliminates the "yellow tint" that accumulates from organics, resulting in crystal-clear, "polished" water.
- Maximize Light Penetration: Ensures optimal light (especially the blue and near UV spectrum) reaches corals, promoting better growth and vibrant coloration.
- Maintain High Redox Potential: Prevents the accumulation of decomposing organics that deplete oxygen (High BOD/COD), maintaining a healthy Redox potential for the entire system.
Usage Guide
-
Routine Maintenance (Organic Load & Yellow Tint Removal):
-
Dosage: Approximately 50 grams (100 ml) per 200 Liters (50 gallons) of water.
-
Duration: Replace every 1.5 to 2 months for a moderately stocked aquarium.
-
-
Post-Medication Treatment:
-
Dosage: Approximately 100 grams (200 ml) per 200 Liters (50 gallons).
-
Duration: Use for a period of one week to adsorb medication residuals.
-
-
Ozone Post-Treatment:
-
Dosage: 50 grams per 50mg/hr of ozone injection, placed at the ozone reactor/protein skimmer outlet.
-
Replacement: Replace when the carbon volume has reduced by approximately 50%.
-
Specifications
- Recommended Mesh Size: 8 x 30 mesh (0.6 x 2.4 mm) for optimal water treatment flow.
- Source Material: Preferred source materials like coconut shell or bituminous coal are used to produce a cleaner product.
- Key Metrics: High ratings for Iodine Number (adsorption of small molecules) and Methylene Blue Number (adsorption of medium molecules).
Note: Always rinse the carbon under tap water to remove any fines, and pre-soak in RO water until all trapped air is released before use. Maintain a moderate water flow of 1000-1500 lph (250-400 gph) per 50g of carbon for best results.
Available Sizes: 100g (3.5 oz), 250g (9 oz), 500g (18 oz), and 1000g (35 oz) containers.
